Jessica arrived at 1437 Henderson before she was ready, standing two minutes early at the foot of the walkway, her hands white-knuckled around the strap of her purse. The house was older than the others on the block: Victorian bones rehabbed with a wash of off-white and discreet black numbers. No sign, just a small plaque by the door—MERCER MIDWIFERY—etched in a font so clean it looked sterile. The place radiated a hospital’s privacy, but with the nervous undercurrent of money.

Jessica checked her phone: no new texts. She refreshed the thread with Randall, thumb moving so fast the screen stuttered. Still nothing. She tucked the phone away, wiped her palms on her leggings, then mounted the steps.

The foyer was just inside the door, walled off with frosted glass. To the right: a waiting room, the chairs expensive-looking but low-slung, upholstery in the muted tones of a sedated infant. The walls were hung with photos, all the same subject: women in various stages of pregnancy and aftermath. Some sat naked in bathtubs, hands cradling bellies or infants. Others stood against white backdrops, the geometry of their bodies lit like statues. None smiled. Some looked defiant, some collapsed, most just hollowed out by the lens.

Jessica hovered by the check-in desk. There was no receptionist, just a bell and a clipboard stacked with intake forms. She sat and took a form, hands shaking enough to smear the ink. She filled out her name, date of birth, insurance—she lied, said she was self-pay. No point inviting any eyes besides the necessary ones. She wrote “N/A” for emergency contact. She thought about putting down Randall’s name anyway, but the letters would not come.

Another glance at the phone. The time advanced by a single minute. Her sweat had gone cold.

The door to the consultation hall opened. The woman who stepped out was the color of high-altitude air: silver hair pulled into a bun so precise it looked vacuum-packed, skin pale but flawless, the cheeks shaded in to remind you of the bones underneath. Her eyes were green, the shade of cypress needles, and they found Jessica instantly.

“Ms. Foster?” The voice was unhurried, every syllable arranged.

Jessica stood, pulse in her throat. “Hi. Yes. I—”

“Vivian Mercer.” She extended a hand. Her fingers were long and narrow, nails trimmed almost to the quick, knuckles prominent but not bony. “Please. Let’s get you comfortable.”

Jessica took the hand. The grip was warm, not hard, but lingered a half-second longer than necessary, as if taking a reading. Vivian steered her down the hallway, past two closed doors. Jessica tried not to stare at the details: the runner rug, the antique umbrella stand, the faint smell of candle wax and medical antiseptic.

The consultation room was not what Jessica expected. No clutter, no baby paraphernalia or cartoon murals. The walls were matte blue, a color that made her think of fetal ultrasound. A single padded exam table stood at one side, a wingback chair across from a sleek glass desk. There was a faint hum in the air—air filter, maybe, or white noise generator. Medical equipment was arrayed along the back counter, every instrument in its place, gleaming.

Vivian gestured to the chair. “Please, make yourself at home.” She settled herself behind the desk, set her hands atop a closed leather-bound book. It looked more like a spellbook than a patient chart.

Jessica sat, legs crossed, knees shaking under the table. She wished she’d worn the maternity jeans instead, something less like a leotard on her new curves. She felt every bulge, every change, magnified.

Vivian studied the intake sheet. “You’re a student?”

Jessica nodded. “Graduate program. Epidemiology.”

“That’s quite a load, considering.” Vivian’s gaze flicked to Jessica’s belly. “How far along are you, precisely?”

Jessica straightened. “Nineteen weeks. I had my anatomy scan two days ago. Everything’s fine.” She blurted the last part, as if heading off questions.

Vivian wrote in the book, the pen gliding silent as breath. “And what brings you to me, rather than your usual OB?”

Jessica glanced at the wall, at the photo of a woman lying on a bed, surrounded by four gloved hands. “Dr. Park said you were the best for… nonstandard cases. That you handle home births, no questions asked.”

Vivian smiled, not unkind. “Dr. Park and I go back. I trust her referrals.” She returned her gaze to Jessica. “What is it, precisely, you need discretion from?”

Jessica’s skin crawled. She hesitated, searching for the version of the truth least likely to detonate. “The father isn’t… He’s not in the picture. I don’t want anyone else to know.” That much was true. The rest, she left blank.

Vivian nodded, as if this was the answer she expected. She wrote again in the book. “Understood. I’ve worked with many women in complicated circumstances. I find it’s best to address them directly, rather than by rumor.” Her eyes held Jessica’s, the meaning behind the words plain.

Jessica swallowed, tried to match the stare. “Okay.”

Vivian opened a slim laptop, tapped a few keys, then shut it again. “You’re healthy. Your records show some early iron deficiency, but that’s resolving. Any bleeding, fever, or pain?”

Jessica shook her head. “Just the normal stuff. Nausea is better now. Still get tired.”

Vivian smiled again, this time with a softness that almost looked real. “You’re allowed to rest. Pregnancy isn’t a punishment.”

Jessica said nothing, unsure if this was meant as comfort or censure.

Vivian set aside the book. “We can begin the physical exam. It won’t take long. You can undress behind that screen, if you prefer.” She indicated a folding privacy divider, the kind used for art models, painted a deep matte.

Jessica hesitated, then moved behind the divider. She stripped off her jacket, then her shirt, revealing the maternity bra that pushed her breasts up like a trophy shelf. She felt exposed, more so than any time with Randall. She unzipped her leggings, the fabric fighting her thighs, then peeled them off. Her belly looked obscene in profile—round and high, the skin tight and veined, her navel an outie now, puckered and raw.

She slipped on the paper gown folded on the chair, then stepped out.

Vivian was waiting by the exam table, gloved hands at her sides. “If you’ll lie back?”

Jessica obeyed, the paper crinkling under her. The table was warm, an electric pad beneath the sheet. Vivian’s hands moved to the dome of Jessica’s belly, pressing at the sides, fingers tracing the perimeter.

“May I?” she said, and Jessica nodded.

Vivian pressed with slow increments, palpating the fundus, mapping the borders. “You’re measuring at exactly twenty centimeters,” she said, drawing a tape measure from the holster at her hip. “Right on schedule for twenty weeks.”

Jessica winced at the pressure. Not pain, exactly—more like a hot flush that shivered down into her pelvis.

Vivian watched her, eyes sharp. “Sensitive?”

Jessica nodded, embarrassed.

Vivian made a note on her leather book, then set it down. “Pregnancy heightens every sensation. It’s a feedback loop—the more you feel, the more you notice.” She rolled the word notice around, letting it land.

Snow began before dusk.

By nightfall, it pressed white hands against every window and buried the road beneath the pass. Old beams groaned. Fire snapped in the hearth. Beyond the glass, mountain and sky disappeared into one another.

Alaric kept his inn as he kept his heart.

Clean.

Ordered.

Quiet.

Fresh linens waited at the foot of every bed. Bread cooled beneath a cloth. Coffee had been ground for morning. Chairs sat tucked beneath tables, lamps trimmed, ashes swept.

Everything had its place.

Everything but him.

He had loved once. Properly. Faithfully. Completely.

Margaret had laughed in that kitchen. She had stood barefoot on those floorboards. She had warmed her hands at that hearth and told him, every winter, that mountains sounded lonely when snow came hard.

He had told her they were not lonely.

They had him.

Then she was gone.

And stone and timber kept speaking.

A knock came just after nine.

Alaric paused with one hand on the mantel.

No one came this late. Not in weather like this.

Another knock.

He opened his door to two women wrapped in wool and snow.

First came Seraphine, laughing and breathless from the cold, cheeks flushed rose-red beneath a dark hood. Warmth seemed to enter with her. Bright eyes. Quick smile. Hands that reached for life before asking permission.

“You must be Alaric,” she said, looking him over as though storm had delivered her a gift. “And here I was expecting some old mountain troll.”

Alaric did not smile.

He almost did.

“Come in before cold takes you both.”

Isolde entered behind her.

Quieter. Pale from the road. Graceful even with snow clinging to her hem. Her eyes did not rush. They moved over his room, his fire, his empty chairs, his table set for one.

Then they settled on him.

Not his face.

His chest.

Margaret’s ring hung beneath his open collar, gold against worn linen.

Alaric covered it without thinking.

Too late.

Isolde had seen.

They had lost the road below the ridge, Seraphine said. Snow had turned them around. The pass had vanished.

Alaric gave them rooms.

Soup.

Dry blankets.

Distance.

Seraphine refused the last of those.

After supper, she sat close beside him near the hearth, her shoulder almost brushing his as she held out her hands to the flames.

“You live here alone?”

“Yes.”

“That seems a waste.”

Across the room, Isolde looked up.

Alaric felt her glance like a hand.

He shifted away.

Seraphine noticed and smiled softer this time. “I frightened you.”

“No.”

“Yes,” she said. “But not with what I said.”

He had no answer for that.

Isolde rose and went to the window. Snow filled the dark beyond it. Her reflection hovered in the glass, distant and lovely and unreadable.

Alaric looked from Seraphine to Isolde and understood nothing.

Or thought he did.

They belonged to each other. That much was plain. Seraphine’s hand finding Isolde’s sleeve. Isolde listening when Seraphine breathed. Their silence needing no explanation.

He was a guest in something already whole.

He had no right to want its warmth.

No right at all.

Later, when Seraphine had gone to fetch more wood from the kitchen bin, Isolde remained by the fire.

Alaric stood with a poker in his hand, though no log needed tending.

“You needn’t worry,” he said.

Her eyes lifted.

“I know when I am in another man’s house,” he said. “Or another woman’s.”

A faint sadness crossed her face.

“She is generous with warmth,” Isolde said. “I am slower with mine.”

Those words settled between them.

Not jealousy.

Not warning.

Permission, perhaps.

But delicate.

Alaric looked toward the kitchen where Seraphine’s laughter drifted back, low and easy, as if even shadows pleased her.

“Isolde.”

“Yes?”

“I am not a man for games.”

“No,” she said. “I know.”

He turned then.

Her gaze held his. Steady. Almost painful.

“We know who you are,” she said.

His room seemed to still around him.

Alaric felt Margaret’s ring beneath his shirt.

“You do not know anything.”

“We know you buried your wife three winters ago. We know you kept this inn open after. We know every traveler says the same thing.” Isolde stepped closer. “That you feed them well, warm their rooms, mend what breaks, and never once sit with them after supper.”

His throat tightened.

“That is not a story.”

“No,” she said. “It is a wound.”

Seraphine returned with wood and stopped in the doorway.

She looked at Isolde.

Then at him.

No laughter now.

Only tenderness.

That frightened him more.

Seraphine crossed the room and took his hand.

He should have pulled away.

He did not.

Her fingers were warm from the kitchen. Small against his. Certain.

Isolde came nearer. Slowly, as promised. Her hand rose to Margaret’s ring, but did not touch it until he gave the smallest nod.

“Do you still talk to her?” she asked.

Alaric closed his eyes.

Every morning, he nearly said.

But truth had weight.

“Every morning.”

Neither woman recoiled.

Neither asked him to stop.

Seraphine pressed his hand between both of hers. Isolde bowed her head over Margaret’s ring as though it deserved reverence, not shame.

Something in him bent.

Not broke.

Not yet.

Isolde whispered, “I was jealous of her.”

Alaric opened his eyes.

“Not because Seraphine looked at you,” she said. “Not because you looked back.” Her voice trembled, though her face stayed composed. “Because dead women can keep a place no living woman can reach.”

Fire cracked.

Alaric breathed once.

Then again.

“Love was never a room with one chair,” he said.

Seraphine’s fingers tightened around his.

Alaric looked at the hearth, at three shadows cast close together on the floor.

“It was fire,” he said. “If tended gently, it can warm more than one soul.”

Isolde touched his face then.

Only his face.

And somehow it was more intimate than anything he remembered fearing.

Seraphine leaned against his shoulder. Isolde stood before him, close enough that his breath changed to match hers. They did not take Margaret from him.

They made room for her ghost.

And then, with storm closing around the mountain and fire burning low, they made room for him.

Morning came silver and quiet.

Alaric woke before them, as he always did. For a moment, he expected old ache to be waiting at his ribs.

It was there.

But changed.

Softer at its edges.

He dressed and went downstairs.

Fire had been rebuilt.

His table had been set.

Three cups of coffee waited beside the hearth.

Not one.

Three.

Seraphine stood at the stove, hair loose over one shoulder, pouring cream as though she had done it all her life. Isolde sat near the window with Margaret’s old shawl folded carefully across her lap.

Alaric stopped at the foot of the stairs.

Seraphine looked back at him.

“We were not asking you to forget her,” Isolde said.

Seraphine’s smile trembled.

“We only wanted you to remember you were still alive.”

That was when he broke.

Not loudly.

Not in some grand, awful way.

His hand covered his face. His shoulders lowered. The sound that left him was small, almost ashamed.

Then it was not ashamed at all.

He wept because his lodge did not feel like a mausoleum.

He wept because someone had set a cup for him.

Because someone had set three.

Outside, snow kept falling.

Inside, three hands rested together near the fire.

And for the first time since he had buried love, Alaric believed love had not buried him.

Eleanor had not meant to fall in love with the man who guarded the locked door.

That was the first lie she told herself.

The second was that she came to the east corridor every night because she liked the quiet.

There was no quiet there. Not really. The old castle breathed through its stones. Wind slipped beneath the window frames. The torches hissed and snapped. Somewhere beyond the forbidden door, something low and ancient moved in its sleep. A faint tang of smoke hung in the air…

And beside it all stood Gareth.

Always Gareth.

Dark-haired. Silent. Infuriatingly still. His sword rested at his hip, but his hands were never near it when she came. As if he knew she was not the dangerous thing in the hallway.

As if he had forgotten she was a princess.

“You should not be here,” he said.

“You say that every night.”

“And every night, you ignore me.”

Eleanor stepped closer, dragging one fingertip along the wall as though she belonged to the dark more than the throne waiting for her in the morning. “Maybe I like hearing your voice.”

His jaw tightened.

That was why she came.

Not for the door.

For the little cracks in him.

Gareth looked away first, as he always did. He had trained himself not to want, and she could see it in him: the careful posture, the measured breath, the distance he placed between them like a blade laid on the floor.

But distance saved no one.

Not from hunger.

Not from grief.

Not from love.

“You are to be married in three days,” he said.

The words struck harder than they should have. She already knew. The whole kingdom knew. Prince Alaric had arrived with white horses, silver rings, and a smile polished smooth by politics.

Eleanor hated him for being kind.

It would have been easier if he were cruel.

“I know.”

“Then stop coming here.”

Her throat tightened. “Is that an order?”

His eyes found hers.

“No,” he said. “It is me begging.”

The castle seemed to still around them.

Eleanor had imagined Gareth angry, jealous, reaching for her and being refused with duty, honor, all the dead words men used when they were afraid to live.

She had not imagined Gareth begging.

Not in that voice.

She crossed the final space between them.

“Gareth.”

“Don’t.”

But he did not move.

So she touched him.

Only his sleeve at first. Black wool beneath her fingers. Warmth beneath that. His breath caught, as if wounded.

“I have done everything they asked,” she whispered. “I smiled. I bowed. I learned which parts of myself to bury.”

His hand closed around hers.

Too tight.

Not tight enough.

“Eleanor.”

Her name sounded ruined in his mouth.

She lifted her face.

For one trembling second, he fought himself.

Then he lost.

Gareth kissed her like a man falling from a great height, with no prayer left but her. His hands found her waist, her back, her hair. She clung to him, and the world she had been promised became a small, stupid thing compared to the heat of his mouth and the ache in his chest pressed against hers.

The forbidden door groaned behind them.

The groan echoed through the stones, a warning neither of them could ignore. Gareth stiffened, breaking the kiss, his breath harsh against her cheek.

A chill swept the corridor. The torches guttered, casting strange, dancing shadows across the ancient door. For the first time, Eleanor noticed the pattern of runes carved into the wood… patterns she should have known but had never truly seen.

Gareth drew her behind him, hand instinctively going to his sword. “Stay back.”

The groaning deepened into a shuddering thud, as if something was testing the boundary from the other side. The runes flickered, faintly pulsing with dull red light.

Eleanor’s heart hammered. “What is it?”

He shook his head, eyes never leaving the door. “No one’s opened that door in generations.”

From the hall behind them, hurried footsteps approached, the sharp clack of boots on stone. A voice called her name, sharp with fear. “Eleanor!”

It was Lady Ysabeau, her lady-in-waiting, face white as bone. “You must come. Now. The king is asking for you.”

Gareth glanced at Eleanor, torn between duty and something he could not name.

Eleanor squeezed his hand, just once. “I’ll return,” she whispered.

But even as she turned away, the groaning of the door lingered in her ears, and for the first time, she wondered if it was not a warning… but a summons.

Morning, and the house was a coffin lined in old sunlight. Jessica hovered at the edge of the mirror, skin ghost-white against the wood frame, counting the new forms her body had invented overnight. She turned sideways, t-shirt sucked taut over her abdomen—a sphere, not even the shape of normal fat, but something architectural, the geometry of inevitability.

She peeled the fabric up, baring her belly in the chill. The skin was impossibly soft, a taut balloon crammed with nerves, gone shiny in spots from the stretch. She traced the line that bisected her navel—faint, ugly, running straight from ribs to pubic bone. She knew the name: linea nigra. The books said it was pigment, hormones, a sign of normalcy. It looked like a fault line, a roadmap of disgrace.

She pushed against the curve with her thumb, and the whole globe gave under the pressure, rebounding slow. Sixteen weeks, and it felt like she’d always been like this. The bloat had hardened, the vague nausea replaced by a constant, low-level ache. The itch in her skin was a rumor of tearing to come.

She lifted her arms. Her armpits were bristling with stubble—she’d forgotten to shave, again—but that wasn’t the disaster. The real problem was up higher: breasts, grown monstrous overnight, full and veined, the aureoles now a violent plum shade that radiated outward in splotches. She cupped one, squeezing gently; pain fanned out from the pressure, but a small thrill ran through her anyway. The weight felt obscene, overripe. If she let go, they’d swing, heavy as fruit on a breaking vine.

Curiosity trumped shame for a second. She pinched the nipple, harder this time. A bead of clear liquid pearled at the tip, then rolled down, cold and sticky. She recoiled, then caught herself, using the hem of her t-shirt to wipe the fluid away. Another squeeze, another drop. She watched it collect, the surface tension holding until it plopped down onto her skin.

She wanted to puke, or maybe to laugh.

She poked at the other breast, the process clinical now. The same result: a droplet, clear as water but with a hint of yellow. She remembered reading about this—colostrum, pre-milk, the body’s way of getting ready for the feeding to come. She pictured herself as livestock, or as some obscene science project. She wondered if she should save it, bottle it, mail it to Randall as a threat.

A floorboard creaked in the hallway. She yanked the shirt down, but too late: Daniel was in the doorway, eyes wide, mouth already shaping an apology.

“Shit—sorry—” he stammered, but his gaze stuck on her, a split second too long.

She folded her arms, flattening the betraying masses against her chest. “Ever heard of knocking?” Her voice was sharper than she meant, raw with animal panic.

Daniel didn’t answer at first. He stepped back, but didn’t close the door. His gaze flicked down, then up, then fixed on a point just past her ear. “You, uh… you okay?”

She wanted to hiss, to drive him out, but her pulse was racing, adrenaline flooding every limb. She wanted to be invisible, but her body filled the doorway, impossible to ignore.

“Fine,” she said. “Just tired.”

He nodded, but didn’t leave. “You look…” He seemed to consider and discard a dozen adjectives. He settled on: “Healthy.”

Jessica’s stomach twisted. She could still feel the wet patch at her nipple, the way the skin stuck to the shirt. She wondered if it would show through, if he could see the dark circle growing by the second.

“Thanks,” she said, making it sound like an insult.

He laughed, nervous, and then retreated down the hall, feet moving fast. He left the door open.

She wanted to collapse, but the need to check was stronger. She turned back to the mirror, lifted the shirt again. A faint ring, barely visible. The line down her belly looked darker than ever. Her face was flushed, red splotches at the cheekbones, eyes rimmed with sleep and something else.

She closed the shirt, then went to the window. Daniel was in the yard already, pretending to fix a fallen section of fence, but every so often he looked up at the window, squinting in the brightness. She watched him for a while, trying to decide if the embarrassment was worse than the violation.

She went to the bathroom, locked the door, and stripped naked. She stood in the middle of the tile, arms hanging loose, and examined every inch of herself. The thighs were wider, inner skin shiny where it rubbed. The belly button had stretched, a shallow crater now, ringed with a thin red rash. Breasts, swollen, nipples almost obscene in color and size. She remembered the baby books Riley used to leave around the house: “Your body is a miracle,” “Embrace the change.” She felt like a sideshow attraction.

She opened the drawer, found a new pad, and stuck it into the crotch of her underwear. She didn’t trust her body to hold anything in anymore.

She brushed her teeth, spit out blood, and wiped the foam with her wrist.

The rest of the morning was a blur. Riley left for work early, a lipstick print on a napkin and the smell of her perfume lingering in the kitchen. Jessica made herself a protein shake, held the cold bottle against her cheek until the nausea faded. She sat at the table, laptop open, staring at the spreadsheet for class. The numbers swam, digits overlapping, none of it sticking.

She opened a blank document, then started to type. It was the story she and Randall had agreed on, the one she would tell if anyone ever asked.

He’s a graduate student. He was only in town for the summer, a visiting researcher. We met at the lab, just a one-night thing. I don’t know where he is now. I tried to contact him, but his number is dead. I don’t want to talk about it.

She practiced it out loud, whispering into the empty house. Each time she said it, her heart stuttered, like the lie itself might choke her.

She pictured telling Riley. Pictured telling Daniel. Pictured saying it to a stranger—a doctor, maybe, or a nurse at the delivery ward.

She rehearsed it a dozen times, each version flatter and more drained of life.

By noon, she’d committed it to memory. She wrote it down on a scrap of paper, folded it, then burned it over the kitchen sink.

She wondered if the smoke would betray her, if the molecules would carry her secret through the vents and into every room.

She thought about the liquid at her nipple, the dark line at her belly, the way her body kept insisting on its own future.

She pressed her hands to her abdomen, fingers splaying over the dome, and tried to feel for movement. It was still too early, but sometimes, in the absolute silence, she thought she could hear a heartbeat—hers, or someone else’s.

She sat there, listening, until the sun shifted and the house was bright and empty again.

Dinner was staged like a hostage negotiation. The table stretched the length of the dining room, covered in a glacier of white linen, every place setting triangulated with geometric precision. Riley spent the afternoon perfecting the details: three-pronged forks, cut crystal, water glasses brimming with ice that caught the overhead light and fractured it into prismatic spears. The air was chlorinated with lemon-scented polish and the last blast of bleach from the morning’s panic clean.

Jessica was the first to sit, positioning herself at the midway point of the table, equidistant from the doors to kitchen and living room. She wore a gauzy blouse and maternity leggings—already, nothing else fit. She’d chosen the shirt for its opacity, but the fabric went translucent in the warm light, outlining the new architecture of her body: the roundness of belly, the fullness of her chest, the way the sleeves bunched at her thicker arms. She crossed her legs, then uncrossed, knees bracketing the underside of the table.

Randall entered next, rolling up his sleeves as he poured a measure of white wine. He moved with the efficiency of someone who’d worked too many business lunches: slight bow at the shoulder, eyes taking inventory. He placed the bottle exactly at the center of the table, next to a glass pitcher of cucumber water that had started to sweat through the coaster.

Daniel came in last, barefoot, hair still wet from a post-run shower. He wore a plain black t-shirt that made his arms look longer, leaner, and faded jeans that clung too tight at the thigh. He dropped into his chair, spun the steak knife between his fingers, and immediately began dissecting the bread roll Riley had set at each plate.

Riley brought in the salad, a flurry of arugula and watermelon cubes, and set the bowl down with a flourish. She took her seat at the head of the table, checked to make sure everyone had what they needed, then smiled at Jessica with all the anticipation of a showman before curtain.

“So,” said Riley, “big news?”

Jessica’s tongue glued itself to the roof of her mouth. She felt the weight of every gaze, the room suddenly too close, the air pressed up against her skin.

She forced herself to speak. “I’m pregnant,” she said, voice a raw scrape. “Sixteen weeks, today.”

There was a beat of silence. Then Riley’s fork slipped and clattered against the plate, ricocheting off a scalloped edge and landing in the salad. Her face ran a speed-run of emotions: shock, then confusion, then a maternal excitement so fierce it almost split her face open.

“A baby? My god, Jess!” Riley pushed her chair back, circled the table, and wrapped Jessica in a fierce, citrus-scented hug. “Why didn’t you tell me sooner? Who’s the father? What do you need? Are you feeling okay?”

Jessica tensed. She remembered her lines. “He was just… someone from the university. He’s back overseas now.” She made her face blank, eyes steady. “It was fast. It wasn’t a relationship.”

Riley’s arms tightened. “Well, don’t you worry. We’ll figure this out. You’ve got support here, no matter what. Right, Randall?”

Randall raised his glass, a smile fixed to his mouth but not his eyes. “Of course. We’re thrilled for you, Jess.” He glanced at Daniel, as if daring him to say anything.

Daniel didn’t speak. He just looked at Jessica, the stare so sharp she felt it in her bones. His gaze tracked from her face to her hands—folded at her lap, thumb stroking over the knuckles—then to her belly, where the blouse strained against her new geometry. He smiled, just at the corner of his mouth, and for a second Jessica felt as if she was being measured for parts.

Riley launched into a monologue about baby names, her own pregnancy, the drama of Jessica’s birth. “You were almost ten pounds, you know. I waddled for a month before you came out. I bet you’ll have a giant baby, too. It’s in the genes.”

Jessica tried to smile. She wanted to fade into the linen, to become just another neutral, forgettable surface.

Salad plates cleared, Riley brought out the main course: pasta, roasted vegetables, a slab of salmon. She loaded Jessica’s plate with double portions, as if feeding for two required immediate evidence.

Randall poured more wine for himself and Riley, then flicked his attention to Jessica. “Is it safe, for you to drink?” he asked, the words careful, balanced on the edge of paternal and patronizing.

Jessica shook her head. “I’ll stick to water.”

Daniel broke the silence. “Congratulations,” he said, voice pitched low. “Sixteen weeks is impressive.” He speared a chunk of salmon, then added, “Some people don’t make it that far.”

Riley shushed him, shooting a glare. “That’s morbid, Danny.”

Daniel shrugged. “It’s true.”

He looked at Jessica again, this time holding the gaze, not blinking. His eyes were darker than usual, pupils wide and flat, absorbing all available light.

Riley asked, “When’s your first ultrasound? Do you know the gender?”

Jessica swallowed. “Had one already. There’s another next week. They said everything looks normal.”

“Normal!” Riley exhaled, relief flooding her features. “That’s wonderful.”

Daniel cut in again, never looking away from Jessica. “Was it a planned thing?” The question landed with the weight of a punch.

Jessica flinched, but recovered. “No,” she said. “It just happened.”

Daniel smiled, this time showing teeth. “That’s the best way.”

Under the table, Randall’s leg started to bounce, a barely perceptible thrum that shook the silverware. His face was a mask, but his jaw flexed with each bite, the muscle twitching like a trapped animal.

Riley prattled on, laying out plans for a nursery, a shower, prenatal yoga. Jessica tuned her out, focusing instead on the way Daniel’s gaze kept circling back to her belly, the way his fingers drummed an irregular beat on the rim of his plate.

She reached for the salt. Daniel reached at the same time, their hands colliding over the shaker. His fingers brushed against hers, lingering a fraction too long before he let go.

Jessica pulled her hand back, heart pounding. She tried not to look at Randall, but caught the flick of his eye, the quick calculation happening behind the polite smile.

Riley finished her plate, then dabbed at the corners of her mouth with a napkin. “We’ll celebrate,” she announced, “this weekend. Just us. And next month, we’ll tell everyone. Lila, the neighbors, even my mother. No more secrets.”

Jessica wanted to scream. Instead, she nodded, folding her napkin into a tiny, perfect square.

Daniel cleared his throat, the sound deliberate. “You’ll keep it, right?” he said. “The baby.”

The words hung there, radioactive.

Jessica met his eyes. “Yes,” she said, “I will.”

Daniel’s smile turned slow, dangerous. “Good,” he said.

The rest of dinner passed in a blur of small talk and awkward silences. Riley filled the void with plans and jokes, Randall retreated into himself, and Daniel ate in silence, watching Jessica with an intensity that bordered on predation.

When it was finally over, Riley cleared the dishes and went to call Lila with the news. Randall gathered the empty bottles, stacking them with military efficiency. Daniel stood, rolled his shoulders, and disappeared down the hallway without a word.

Jessica sat at the table, hands folded over her stomach, pulse jackhammering in her wrists. She replayed every moment, every word, every glance. The story held for now, but it felt as fragile as a spiderweb, one touch away from collapse.

She stayed there, unmoving, until the sky outside the window turned dark and the house settled into its night rhythm. Only then did she stand, her body twice as heavy as before, and slip quietly up the stairs.

It has been thirty days since my divorce.

That feels strange to write… and it also means its been 30 days of not being hit.

Thirty days doesn’t sound like much. It’s barely a month. But to me, it feels enormous.

I am free!!!

I’m not healed or fixed. I am definitely not suddenly living some perfect, peaceful life where everything makes sense…

But, I am free.

I haven’t been hit in 30 days.

I’m not afraid to go home.

I don’t brace myself before opening a door.

I don’t sit there trying to calculate every word, every look, every little change in the room, wondering if I’m about to make something worse.

That alone is hard to explain.

There’s this thing that happened after I left. The quiet feels suspicious. Almost like I’m waiting for something to happen.

But nothing happens.

The room stays quiet.

The door stays closed.

Nobody is angry.

Nobody is coming after me.

And slowly, my body is starting to understand that maybe it’s allowed to rest.

Right now, “home” means I am living with my mother.

So yes.

There is drama.

There is also love. And help. And a place to land. I know that matters. I know not everyone gets that.

But I am also a grown woman who has been married, divorced, broken down, and dragged through enough. So having someone ask where I’m going, what I’m eating, or why another package showed up at the door can make me want to scream into a pillow.

It could be an apartment.. or a small house. I don’t know yet.

I do know it has to be something quiet and soft. It needs to be somewhere I can make coffee, write, take pictures, light a candle, leave my books wherever I want, and not feel like I am borrowing my own life.

That is what I want next!!

A life that feels like mine and not just survived.

This is the second part of Chapter 12…

The house was a closed ecosystem, every molecule of air recycled through the lungs of the same three people, their drama breeding in the ductwork. Jessica paced the upstairs hallway, restless, unable to focus on her laptop or the glowing rectangle of her phone. The nausea had ebbed to a low hum, replaced by a headache that felt like a hand clamped to the back of her skull.

She passed Riley’s bedroom door, half-open, the voice from inside pitched for secrecy.

“I’m worried about her,” Riley was saying. “She’s not herself. She hardly leaves her room, doesn’t answer texts. Lila, I swear she looks like she’s hiding something.”

Jessica stopped. She pressed herself flat against the wall, heartbeat loud as a siren.

Riley’s voice dropped even lower. “She’s putting on weight, too. Not just a little—her face, her… everywhere. And the clothes she’s wearing? Always loose, layered. Like she’s trying to cover up.”

A pause, then a sigh. “No, I haven’t found anything. But it’s not just that. She’s tired all the time. Says it’s school, but I checked her grades—they’re fine. You think she’s seeing someone?”

Lila’s voice was faint, the phone volume just enough to pick up the key words: “—maybe stress, but—watch for depression… hormones…”

Riley again: “You don’t think she’d be dumb enough to get knocked up, do you? She’s smarter than that. I just wish she’d tell me.”

Jessica’s throat closed up, a fist tightening. She edged past the door, careful not to let the floorboards betray her.

Riley kept talking, speculation turning to self-reproach. “I just want her to be happy, you know? Is that so much to ask? If she needs help, I’ll do it, but she has to meet me halfway.”

The conversation trailed off into logistics—lunch plans, a joke about the neighbor’s dog. Jessica retreated to her room, closed the door, and slid to the floor. Her phone was cold in her hand. She stared at the screen for a full minute, then opened her contacts and found Dr. Park.

She typed, then erased, then typed again.

Can we meet?—J.

The reply came in less than a minute. Of course. Tomorrow, 9am?

Jessica exhaled, but the pressure in her chest didn’t ease. She answered yes, then set the phone face-down on the bed.

She stood in front of the mirror, the full-length one on the back of her closet door. She lifted her shirt, examined the curve of her stomach. It was subtle, but the change was real. She tried on three different outfits, each one tighter than the last. She chose the baggiest, a black sweatshirt from an ex-boyfriend and a pair of maternity leggings she’d ordered online, “just in case.”

She imagined herself walking into the clinic, the waiting room full of strangers, each one able to see the truth before she could speak it. She imagined Riley at the dinner table, asking again if there was something she needed to confess.

She pressed her hands to her stomach, the gesture automatic. There was something alive under the surface, something that threatened to outpace her ability to hide it.

She needed a plan.

She scrolled through her messages with Dr. Park, looking for the right words. Maybe she could claim she’d been pregnant before she moved home—maybe she could say it was a hookup, a one-night mistake, anything but the truth.

She lay back on the bed, phone clutched to her chest, and stared at the ceiling until the lines blurred. The silence in the house was absolute, but she could feel the pressure building, the air thickening with the threat of exposure.

She closed her eyes and tried to picture the future.

It felt like suffocating.

Fourteen weeks was not halfway, but her body had already declared defeat. Jessica felt it in the way her hips anchored themselves to the kitchen chair, the sudden new heft in her breasts, the way every button on her shirt looked one microtrauma away from popping. Her face in the hallway mirror was wider, cheeks smudged with a permanent flush, jawline beginning its slow retreat. She tried to pretend the changes were minor, but Riley’s gaze made denial impossible.

“You’ve put on a healthy weight,” Riley said, voice knifed between compliment and warning. She circled the table, pouring coffee, setting plates. Her fingers moved with the bored grace of a veteran hostess, but her eyes kept returning to Jessica’s chest, her belly, the impossible-to-ignore way Jessica’s hands hovered protectively over her lower abdomen. “I swear, three months back in this house and you’re a whole different person. Not a criticism. You just look… softer.”

Jessica’s stomach contracted, a spasm that felt as if her organs were realigning themselves for some alien purpose. She pressed her palm flat on the table, grounding herself in wood and gravity. “Guess I missed my window,” she said, eyes on the tabletop.

“You’re still young,” Riley said, though her gaze said otherwise. “Just remember, bodies don’t forgive like they used to.”

The words stuck. Jessica imagined her body as a list of grievances, each day another line item—nipple sensitivity, low back pain, the constant slow-motion inflation of her abdomen. She glanced at the glass of orange juice, the way the acid promised disaster, and pushed it away.

Riley noticed. “You’re not drinking the juice?”

“Lately you’re all about the health stuff. Vitamins, salads, no caffeine. Are you on a plan or something?”

Riley arched an eyebrow. “You know, if you ever want to talk about what’s really going on, you can. You’ve been weird since you moved back in. Not bad, just…” She trailed off, her eyes searching Jessica’s face for the seam where the truth would split.

A silence hovered. Jessica tried to think of a reply, but the next wave of nausea hit harder, deeper. She stood abruptly, the chair legs screeching on tile.

“Sorry,” she managed, and fled to the bathroom.

The bathroom was a clinical white, the smell of bleach and old cosmetics mixing in the air. She dropped to her knees, hands gripping the rim of the toilet, and dry-heaved until the taste of stomach acid burned a path up her nose. The pressure behind her eyes threatened to burst them. She retched again, harder, and a hot thread of urine leaked into her underwear, unbidden. Tears came next, reflexive, useless.

She flushed, wiped her mouth with trembling fingers, and tried to regain composure. In the mirror above the sink, her face was pallid, lips swollen from the strain, the hair at her temples slicked to her skin with sweat. She adjusted her shirt, tugged the fabric down, but the roundness beneath would not be flattened. Fourteen weeks and her body was advertising the secret to anyone who cared to look.

There was a knock. “Jess?” Riley’s voice, softer now, half-concerned, half-suspicious. “You okay?”

Jessica ran cold water, splashed it over her face. “Yeah. Must be a stomach bug.”

A pause. “Are you sure it’s not… something else?”

Jessica gripped the counter so hard her knuckles whitened. “No, Mom. Just a bug.”

The word “Mom” worked as a shield, but Riley’s silence on the other side of the door said she wasn’t buying it.

Jessica dabbed her face with a hand towel, then used the towel to scrub at the red marks her fingers had left in her skin. She rearranged her shirt, tried to suck her stomach in, but it only made her chest jut out more. She thought of the twin pink lines, the ultrasound in Dr. Park’s office, the printout folded in the bottom of her backpack. She thought of Riley, and how her mother would implode if she ever knew.

She opened the door. Riley stood in the hall, arms crossed, eyes flicking to the wetness at the corners of Jessica’s mouth.

“I’m fine,” Jessica repeated, voice steadier now.

Riley uncrossed her arms, placed a hand on Jessica’s shoulder. “You know, I won’t judge. Whatever it is, you can tell me.”

Jessica forced a smile. “Thanks. I promise, nothing to confess.”

Riley’s eyes dipped to Jessica’s belly, lingered, then shifted back up. “If you say so.”

They returned to the kitchen in silence. The bagel on Jessica’s plate was turning to paste, the cream cheese starting to sweat. Riley poured herself more coffee, her movements now stiff, brittle. She didn’t sit down. Instead, she hovered at the sink, back turned, pretending to scrub a mug.

Jessica picked at her food, each bite harder to swallow than the last. Her breasts ached, swollen against the inside of her shirt. She shifted in her chair, legs crossed tight, belly pressed against the edge of the table. She tried to focus on the ordinary: the drip of the faucet, the hum of the refrigerator, the dust motes spinning in the sunlit air. But her mind kept looping the conversation, the way Riley had looked at her, the inevitability of being discovered.

She stared at her reflection in the sliding glass door. She didn’t look like herself. She looked like someone else—a girl at the end of a long, slow disaster.

Riley set the mug on the drying rack, the ceramic clinking against metal. “You want to join me for yoga later?” she asked, tone now artificially light. “It might help with your, uh, digestion.”

Jessica shook her head. “I think I’m just going to rest.”

“Suit yourself.” Riley wiped her hands on a dish towel, then left the room. The sound of her footsteps faded up the stairs, leaving Jessica alone in the kitchen with the sour taste of fear and the certainty that her secret would not stay secret much longer.

She pressed her hands to her belly, feeling the warmth, the barely-there curve that would soon be impossible to hide. Her heart pounded in her chest, every beat a countdown to exposure.

She wondered how long she had.

She wondered if she could make it one more day.

The rest of the morning passed in a haze. Jessica drifted from her bed to the shower to her phone, circling distractions but never settling. She pretended to study, flicking through a PDF of reproductive endocrinology, but all she absorbed were the graphics: ovaries cross-sectioned, the schematic of a uterus at twenty weeks, the black-and-white blur of a fetal pole at twelve. Each image struck like a reminder, a countdown, another opportunity for failure.

She was heading downstairs when she caught Riley’s voice, not at full volume but not exactly concealed. The master bedroom door was ajar, Riley on the bed in her pale blue bathrobe, phone cupped in both hands, the expression on her face unguarded. Jessica froze, toes hanging off the edge of the step.

“I’m worried about her,” Riley said, the words soft but thick with intent. “No, not depressed, just—strange. She’s eating weird, never hungry, and she gets these headaches. You know how she is about her body, but lately it’s like she doesn’t care.”

A pause, then the crisp, familiar cadence of Lila’s voice, too faint for Jessica to make out. Riley nodded, then picked at a loose thread on the comforter. “You think it’s a boy? Maybe. She’s not herself. There was a stain on her laundry last week—blood, I think, but not from a period.” She laughed, but there was no humor in it. “You know how I get when I don’t have the facts. Maybe she is seeing someone secretly.”

Another pause. Lila’s words, garbled, insistent.

“She’d tell me,” Riley said, but her tone made it a question. “Or, no, maybe she wouldn’t. She’s always been better at lying than I was.”

Jessica’s heart hammered so hard she thought she’d be sick again. She inched down, as if the creak of the stair might give her away. The next words hit her like a slap.

“I’m afraid she’ll end up like me,” Riley whispered, then, “—pregnant, alone, making a mess of it.”

Jessica couldn’t listen anymore. She retreated, footsteps feather-soft, back to her room. She locked the door, sat on the edge of the mattress, and stared at her hands. They were pale, shaking, the knuckles blanched with tension.

She pressed her palm to her belly. The slight curve was now impossible to ignore. Fourteen weeks and already she was failing the test.

She fished her phone from the bedsheets, thumbed the contact list, and called Dr. Park.

The phone rang twice.

“Jessica,” Dr. Park answered, voice as crisp as an opening scalpel. “Is this urgent, or can I call you back after clinic?”

Jessica fought to keep her voice level. “Sorry. No, it’s—” she sucked in air, “—I just need advice. On how to keep things… private.”

Park was silent for a moment, weighing the parameters. “Did you have a bleed? Pain?”

“No. I just—” Jessica glanced at the door, the lock, the hallway beyond. “My mom’s asking questions. She’s suspicious. I think she’s close to figuring it out.”

There was a rustle of paper, a click of keyboard keys. “How far along are you now, exactly?”

Jessica did the math, or tried to. “End of the fourteenth week. Maybe a little past.”

Dr. Park hummed, a sound of approval or calculation, impossible to tell. “You’re well into the second trimester. Has your weight changed significantly?”

“I’m up twelve pounds,” Jessica admitted. “And my—my belly’s visible now, at least if you know what you’re looking for.”

“I see,” Dr. Park said, and there was a note of satisfaction in the voice. “You’re progressing beautifully, then.”

Jessica blinked. “I don’t feel beautiful.”

There was a hint of a laugh. “That’s normal. May I suggest we schedule an appointment? If anyone asks, you can say it’s a gynecological check. I can produce documentation to show the pregnancy began before you moved home, if that would make things easier.”

Jessica was quiet, absorbing the implications. “You can do that?”

“I have experience with women in complicated situations,” Dr. Park replied. “Medical paperwork is flexible. People rarely read it closely, and if they do, I can explain away any inconsistencies. It’s not uncommon for women to need creative solutions.”

Jessica’s heart rate slowed, but only slightly. “Okay. I’ll come in. Tomorrow?”

“I have an opening at three,” Park said. “Don’t eat heavy beforehand, and bring any vitamins you’re taking. We’ll get you measured and see how things look.”

Jessica thanked her and hung up. She set the phone on the pillow, then pressed both hands to her belly, framing the new arc of flesh. She tried to imagine the child inside her, the cluster of cells now sprouting organs and nerves and the beginnings of a face. She tried to imagine the future, but every time she did, she saw Riley’s face first—her look of disappointment, of loss.

She would go to Dr. Park tomorrow. She would get the proof. She would carry the lie until the end.

She lay back on the bed, stared at the ceiling, and wondered if she’d ever been in control of anything at all.

The walls of the exam room were the blue of swimming pools or sanitized memories. Jessica sat on the paper-covered table, knees together, toes pressed flat to the aluminum step. The paper gown stuck to the sweat under her arms and bunched at her lap, refusing to cover anything with dignity. Dr. Park entered without a knock, her heels silent on the linoleum. She wore a tailored coat the color of expensive fog, and her hair was as severe as a scalpel. She smiled when she saw Jessica, but the warmth was measured, never overspilled.

“On schedule,” said Dr. Park, glancing at the monitor, then at Jessica’s chart. She rolled her stool close, set the file on the counter, and let her gaze travel up and down Jessica’s body. “Have a seat,” she said, then, “Sorry, bad habit. You’re already seated.”

Jessica smiled, too wide. “It’s okay.”

Jessica shook her head, but then amended, “I’m hungry all the time. But then everything makes me nauseous.”

Dr. Park nodded. “That’s a good sign. HCG levels are surging, which means the placenta is forming well.” She squeezed the bulb, eyes flicking to the dial. “Weight gain is above average, but not a concern. Some women just metabolize differently. Especially in—” she paused, her mouth curving, “—intense situations.”

Jessica felt the flush creep up her neck. “I think it’s just water weight.”

Dr. Park removed the cuff, then moved to the tape measure. “Lie back, please.”

Jessica obeyed. The table’s paper cover crinkled under her, the sound loud in the small space. Dr. Park lifted the gown, exposing the gentle rise of Jessica’s abdomen, and measured the curve from pubic bone to navel with the precision of a master tailor.

“Fourteen point seven centimeters,” Dr. Park announced. She pressed two fingers into the flesh above the pubic bone, palpated, then tapped the spot as if staking a flag. “Fundal height is exactly where it should be. You’re carrying beautifully.”

Jessica exhaled, letting her stomach balloon. Dr. Park’s fingers slid over her skin, lingering, then retreating. She made notes on the chart, pausing before each line to ensure the script was neat, the dates properly predated. Jessica saw her own name at the top, next to “LMP: June 9,” a lie that placed the start of the pregnancy three weeks before Randall had first touched her.

Dr. Park snapped on latex gloves. “We’ll do a quick pelvic, then the ultrasound.”

The exam was mechanical, Dr. Park’s voice a steady metronome of instruction and observation. “Relax your knees. Let them fall to the side. You’ll feel some pressure.” The speculum was cold but not cruel, the process over in seconds. Dr. Park removed the gloves, dropped them in the bin, and smiled. “Everything is progressing. Cervix is closed and firm. No lesions, no discharge. You’re very healthy.”

Jessica felt herself relax, the tension ebbing for the first time all day.

Dr. Park gestured to the ultrasound machine. “You ready to see?”

Jessica nodded, unable to speak.

Dr. Park squirted a glob of gel onto the exposed skin of Jessica’s belly. The contact was electric—cold, viscous, impossible to ignore. Dr. Park pressed the wand into the gel, the pressure deep, and aimed the probe with gentle but insistent movements. The monitor flickered, then resolved into gray-and-white static.

“There’s your baby,” said Dr. Park. She rotated the wand, moving it with the confidence of someone who’d done this a thousand times. The image sharpened: a head, a curved spine, the beginnings of limbs. The fetus floated in a pocket of darkness, curled like a comma, alien and human at once.

Dr. Park pointed. “You see the spine here? And the arms, moving?”

On the screen, a flicker: the faint wave of a limb, the twitch of a hand. Jessica stared, throat tight. She tried to speak, but her mouth refused to cooperate.

“There’s a strong heartbeat,” Dr. Park said, and toggled a setting. The sound filled the room—a rapid, mechanical flutter, impossibly loud.

Jessica’s eyes stung with tears. She blinked, embarrassed.

Dr. Park angled the monitor. “You’re doing perfectly. It’s normal to feel overwhelmed.” She clicked a button, printing a strip of images from the side of the machine. She handed the glossy sheet to Jessica, who took it with trembling fingers.

“Will the father be involved in care?” Dr. Park asked, her tone light, but the gaze razor-sharp.

Jessica hesitated. “He—he wants to be. But it’s complicated.”

Dr. Park’s lips parted in a half-smile, the look both clinical and intimate. “It often is. Some men have difficulty at first, but many find a pregnant partner irresistibly attractive. The visible evidence of their virility can be quite… stimulating.”

Jessica’s face burned. She looked away, but the thought lodged deep.

Dr. Park wiped the gel from Jessica’s belly, her hands gentle, almost caressing. “I see women every week who think their bodies are ruined by pregnancy. They’re almost always wrong. Most partners are obsessed. You’ll see.”

Jessica exhaled, the relief as dizzying as the fear.

Dr. Park picked up the chart, flicked her wrist to snap the file shut. “Next visit in a month. Unless you want a check-in sooner?” The question lingered, heavy with implication.

Jessica shook her head, then changed her mind. “Maybe just a call? If something comes up?”

Dr. Park scribbled her personal cell on a card and pressed it into Jessica’s hand. Their fingers touched, warm and dry and deliberate.

“You’re not alone, Jessica,” Dr. Park said, and her voice was velvet.

Jessica dressed in silence, folding the gown into the trash, wiping the last of the gel from her belly. She stared at the ultrasound printout, the image of her child—spine, head, the flutter of life—captured in grainy monochrome.

She walked out into the corridor, head high, a feeling of power and terror and anticipation blooming in her chest.

She could not wait to show Randall.

The garden shed stood apart from the house, surrounded by brown grass and the dying summer scent of cut weeds and chlorine. Jessica slipped out just past midnight, a single key in her hand and the ultrasound photo rolled tight in her fist. She moved fast, head down, every step a new audition for guilt. The porch light was off, but a sliver of moon lit the back yard and cast her shadow long against the fence.

Inside, the shed was a sarcophagus of old tools and black plastic bins. There was a workbench on one side, a stack of unopened bags of potting soil, a battered shop-vac leaking sawdust onto the concrete. A bare bulb hung from a cord above, throwing a hard white circle onto the warped plywood floor. The air was thick with fertilizer and the burnt-sugar scent of stored gasoline.

Randall was already there, waiting. He sat on an upended crate, elbows on knees, the sleeves of his t-shirt rolled up to the edge of his tattoo. He didn’t look up at first, just ran his thumb along the seam of his jeans, back and forth, as if rehearsing some violence he couldn’t speak aloud.

Jessica shut the door behind her, and the shed became a capsule, airless and secret. Her heart pounded, every beat a drumroll for disaster.

She took two steps forward, then stopped. She let her eyes adjust, let the moment stretch. She wondered if Randall would speak first, or if she’d have to.

He broke the silence. “You got it?”

She nodded, then uncurled her hand and held out the strip of photos. Her palm was slick with sweat; the paper stuck, then tore free with a soft whisper.

Randall took the printout, eyes locked on hers the whole time. He unrolled it with careful fingers, then angled it toward the light. His pupils dilated, black swallowing gray, as he scanned the images.

He didn’t speak for a long time.

Jessica stood there, waiting, arms crossed over her chest. She felt the tension in the room like an undertow, a gravitational force that would not allow escape.

Randall’s breath caught. He reached out, caught her wrist, and pulled her closer. “Come here,” he said, voice raw.

The stick in her hand radiated dread, a single blue line resolved to double, chemical evidence she’d failed to outwit her own body. The air was still… seven a.m., house shivering in early light, and all her focus pooled to a single muscle-twitching question: how long could she hide this?

The mirror offered no answers. She looked sallow, skin thin as wax, lips chapped from a week of biting them raw. Her navel was a gentle cave, but below it—she lifted her shirt, the motion jerky—there was a stripe. The linea nigra was faint, a rumor of pigment running south from her belly button. She traced it with her finger. It felt hot to the touch, as if the darkness meant fever, infection, punishment.

“Rough night?” he asked. The way he said it: soft, like the start of a dare.

She shrugged, moving to the fridge. “Didn’t sleep.”

He flicked the seed into the trash, then pushed a cold can across the counter. “Ginger ale. For the hangover, or whatever.”

She palmed the can, pressed it to her temple before opening it. The cold bled through her skull. She sat at the counter, keeping her body hunched, arms wrapped tight around her midsection. Daniel’s eyes tracked her, pupils slow to adjust to the kitchen’s cheap LED overhead.

He loaded the bagels into the toaster, moving with a bored precision that reminded her of her mother’s early-morning routines: the silent semaphore of domesticity, every motion two steps ahead of the next crisis.

“You look different,” he said, not smiling.

Jessica sipped the ginger ale, forcing the bubbles past the nausea. “Probably the hoodie.”

He shook his head, lips pursed. “Nah. You’re glowing.”

She nearly choked on the swallow. “I’m what?”

“Glowing.” He said it again, louder, as if repeating the word would make it less loaded. “Like, healthy. Or radiant. Or some shit.”

“Yeah, well.” She picked at the label on the can, nails catching on the seam. “Maybe I’m pregnant.” She said it as a joke, but the silence that followed vacuumed all oxygen out of the room.

Daniel grinned, but it was all teeth. “Congrats. Can I be the godfather?”

She barked a laugh, the sound strangled. “Not unless you want the job description to include projectile vomit and constant terror.”

He put his hands up, mock surrender. “Hard pass.”

He set the plate in front of her, the banana coins arranged in a lopsided smiley. The bagel halves were charred at the edges, smeared with a too-generous layer of cream cheese. The sight of the food turned her stomach, but she forced herself to break off a piece and chew, the texture gluey and bitter.

Daniel watched her eat, tapping his finger against the rim of the plate in a syncopated rhythm.

“So what’s the plan for today?” he asked.

She shrugged. “Homework. Laundry. Maybe a nap.”

He reached for the remote and flipped the TV on, but kept it muted. Stock tickers scrolled at the bottom, footage of a fire somewhere on a loop above. He watched her from the corner of his eye. “You know you don’t have to pretend around me, right?”

She gripped the can, the cold gone now, replaced by a sticky condensation. “Pretend what?”

“That you’re okay.”

She set the can down, too loud. “I’m fine.”

He held the silence, then nodded. “Sure.”

She stared at the banana coins, their faces softening, turning brown at the edges.

“Thanks for breakfast,” she said, voice flat. She slid off the stool and carried the plate to the sink, running water over the uneaten half.

She retreated to the laundry room, the door a thin barrier against the world. The air was warm, humid with the smell of detergent and old towels. She braced her hands on the edge of the washer and doubled over, the nausea cresting in a wave so pure it felt like drowning. She dry-heaved into the sink, bile burning the back of her throat. She wiped her mouth on her sleeve and spat twice.

She didn’t hear the door open, but she felt the change in air pressure. She turned to find Randall leaning against the jamb, arms crossed, eyes sharp and predatory. He wore the same shirt as the night before, sleeves rolled up, a line of dried soap on his forearm.

“You okay?” he said, voice low.

She straightened, tried to flatten her hair, but her hand shook.

“Food poisoning,” she lied.

He stepped into the room, the bulk of him filling the space. He closed the door with a soft click and stood inches from her, so close she could smell the aftershave, the bourbon from last night still clinging to his breath.

He didn’t ask again. He just put his hand on her hip, thumb pressed to the elastic waistband of her leggings. “Let me see,” he said.

She tried to push his hand away, but he was immovable. He lifted her hoodie with clinical efficiency, exposing her abdomen. The skin was pale and soft, but the line was visible: a dirty-blonde streak, barely perceptible, running straight down the center.

He traced it with his index finger, the touch so light it felt electric. “You’re showing already,” he murmured, a note of awe or disgust—it was impossible to parse.

She looked away. “It’s not that big a deal.”

He thumbed the lower curve of her belly, then slid his hand up, palm flat over her navel. “It is to me.”

He caught her chin and forced her to look at him. His eyes were different now—harder, less human. He leaned in and kissed her, tongue slick and demanding, breath hot in her mouth. She tried to twist away, but his other hand slid up to her chest, finding the nipple through the thin cotton of her bra.

She gasped, the sensation sharp, almost painful. He smiled against her cheek. “Sensitive?”

She nodded, a whisper.

He pressed harder, rolling the nipple between finger and thumb until it stiffened under his touch. He peeled the hoodie and bra up, exposing the breast. The areola was darkening, the skin around it stippled and raw. He bent and ran his tongue around the edge, then sucked it into his mouth, teeth grazing just shy of mean.

She clamped her hand over her mouth to stifle the noise. He moved to the other side, repeating the process, his hands never leaving her hips.

When he finished, he pulled her shirt down, then zipped the hoodie up to her chin. He stepped back and examined her, head tilted.

“Beautiful,” he said, and left the room.

Jessica sagged against the washing machine, the vibration of the spin cycle running up through her bones. She hugged herself, pressed her palm to her belly, and counted the seconds until her body stopped trembling.

She waited five minutes before leaving the laundry room, the echo of his touch lingering in every nerve ending.

The new bras were reinforced, double-thick at the bottom, engineered to withstand the weight of transformation. She held one up, thumb running along the band, and tried to picture herself in it. The image felt unreal, like fitting someone else’s skin.

The door creaked open. She didn’t hear a knock, didn’t expect one. Randall entered, hair still wet from the gym, t-shirt clinging to his chest. He didn’t pause to acknowledge the tableau of lingerie on the bed. He closed the door behind him, turned the lock, and stood there for a moment, breathing heavier than seemed necessary.

She tensed, grabbing for the nearest shirt, but he was at the bed in two strides, kneeling between her open knees. The mattress dipped under his weight, springs shrieking. He stared at the pile of bras, then at her chest, as if daring the fabric to hide anything from him.

“You buy these?” he asked, voice low.

She nodded, unable to speak.

He picked one up—blue, the color of denial—and held it to her breast. “Smart,” he said, “you’ll need the support.”

He set the bra aside, then grabbed the hem of her t-shirt, peeling it up in one motion. The air hit her skin; nipples already hard, areolae dark as bruises. He made a noise, half-praise, half-ownership, and cupped both breasts in his hands. His thumbs pressed into the tissue, testing the give, the volume. It was not gentle.

“Jesus,” he muttered. “Look at them. Swollen already.”
